Rich history of Istria
The first traces of life in Istria date back to ancient history,
and the first inhabitants were the inhabitants of caves and
caverns.
In the first millennium BC, in Iron Age, Istria was inhabited by
tribe Histri, name of "Istria" is derived from their name. From
this period there are many traces and remains throughout the area,
and usually includes a variety of building techniques made
drywall that was typical of that time.
Istria was interesting to many conquerors, one of
them were Romans. In year 181 BC after the
Romans annexed the region of Veneto, they came on
gates of Istria. Histrians saw this, but they
could not defend themselves, so they fell
under Roman influence too, in those time
was built a large number of
Istrian towns whose names are until
today remained almost the same.
With the fall of the Western Roman Empire in year 476. the
Istria was initially ruled by the Goths, and then the Byzantines,
who ruled until year 788.
Slavs are coming during VI. and VII. Ct. to areas of Istra who
eventually Slavenised Roman population.
Austria wins Istria in year 1814, and formed a single province
with Trieste as its capital.
Over the years, continually took the fight for national rights
and freedom of the Istrian people.
During World War 1, the war stopped the national struggle, but
at the same time Italy has shown interest in this area. With the
Agreement from 1920 Kingdom of Yugoslavia ceded Istria to
Yugoslavia. At the time of fascism in Italy same had a strong
impact on the region of Istria. Everything what was nationally was
prohibited and closed, Croatian names were Italianised,

freer.

and bears witness to the rich cultural heritage, tradition and
culture that to this day very well preserved.
